"Adopt North Church" Sunday, October 11, 2015

There was a gathering at North Church to celebrate the accomplishments of the “Adopt North Church” program and to discuss new initiatives in this mission. Partner churches and other guests participated.

We are in the season of Lent

We are in the season of Lent, leading up to Easter. Lent is a time for us to reflect on our struggle to follow Jesus and to know how much we need his love and his forgiveness. Following Jesus is a hard task. He asks us to see in one another the image of God we are all created in. He asks us to embrace his vision of the reign of God. Brothers and sisters have often used different words to help us understand this vision of Jesus. Martin Luther King talked of “the beloved community.”

This Lent, at North Church, we have an opportunity to listen to the voices of brothers and sisters who call is see the image of God in one another, to catch a glimpse of the reign of God among us. These are voices not often heard.

Many of you who have been to North have noticed the framed pictures on the walls of the worship space. These are scenes from the gospels, the settings and the people, including Jesus, are from rural Africa. They are beautiful, and help us from North America see Jesus in a different light. During Lent, we have taken these pictures down, and we have hung pieces of artwork created by homeless persons, some from North. They are part of a series called: “stations of the cross/stations from the street: a journey with Christ through the eyes of those living in poverty.” The traditional stations of the cross are a very common means of reflecting on Jesus’ suffering on his way to the cross, and are traditionally reflected on during Lent. The “stations from the street” help us to reflect on Jesus’ presence in those who suffer isolation, oppression, violence today.

On Saturday, March 21st, we will gather at North at noon for lunch. We will then move to the sanctuary to walk and reflect on the stations of the cross/stations from the street. We anticipate finishing about 2:30 to 3:00. We hope that this time of prayer and reflection will help us to open our eyes and our hearts anew to Jesus’ love, and his call to walk with brothers and sisters who too often are forgotten, ignored, and made to suffer.

Please join us; Saturday, March 21, 12:00, at North Church.
